You could be Magnesium deficient?
“Insulin Resistance, Heart Disease, Depression, Diabetes, osteoporosis, stress, PMS, cramping, high blood pressure, and preeclampsia, to name only a few, are conditions that have been linked to low levels of Magnesium. Check out www.mgwater.com to see more.
So, how can one substance be so powerful?
Magnesium is important in helping to create energy from our food, in correct insulin function, and in helping to relax muscles. When someone is deficient in the critical mineral magnesium, the location of the muscles involved determines the effect
– muscles be in the gut, constipation
– on the skeleton, restless legs, and body cramps
– in the arteries, high blood pressure
Oh, and low magnesium can also cause chocolate cravings!
When we look at Magnesium deficiency and PCOS we find:
* Low levels have been found in patients with Diabetes (who like women women with PCOS, are insulin resistant.
* Women with metabolic syndrome and systemic (low grade) inflammation (again, common in PCOS – see Chapter 8 of my book ‘Conquer Your PCOS Naturally’) were found to also be low in Magnesium. Low grade inflammation is thought to be a MAJOR cause of chronic illnesses and death, ie cancer, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes… All of the things women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome are at greater risk of.
* Women with PCOS were also found to have significantly lower serum levels of Magnesium
The great news?..
It’s not hard to increase your Magnesium intake!
Some Magnesium rich foods include:
– Red Meat
– Chicken
– Nuts (Almonds, brazil, cashew, hazelnut, pecan etc)
– Tahini
– Dried apples
– Banana
– Licorice
– Legumes
– Spinach
– Parsley
– Dark Chocolate (just not too much!)
– Passionfruit
– Blackberries
– Rasberries
– Sesame seeds
– Dried fruits, such as Apple, Apricots, Dates (just don’t overdo it as they can be high in sugar and sulphites)
If you have PCOS, you must make sure you are getting sufficient amounts of Magnesium – and that you can absorb what you eat… but, that’s a future topic.
You of course, can supplement as I do. After all, the magnesium levels in our food have dropped considerably.
